On their Various 2 compilation, Altered Circuits returns with a compelling four-track selection from as many artists with distinct voices. Perrax En La Calle sees tINI fuse beefy drums, arpeggiated basslines, and ominous synth work. She knows what makes the dancefloor tick even with her eyes closed, and here she keeps the energy high, channeling electro and italo into a contemporary club smash. Ionic follows, a fusion of quirky, pointillist hooks playing call and response, driven by 909 kicks and an underlying sub pattern. Mogwaa entrances, and often pulls the rug only to reveal a more intricate melodic embroidery – it’s done so deftly and engagingly that there’s no way not to get drawn in. On the flip, rising talent Desiree Falessi joins with the peak-time moment Scandal. Static-charged basslines fuse with reverb-drenched percussion salvos, and as sinuous pads and subtle variations on the theme emerge, the intensity grows to a breaking point. Closer Flex features a sharp, arpeggiated bassline snaking between misty, LFO-driven synthesizers, sparse and alarm-like melodies, hushed vocals, and gated-reverb snares. When classic high-pass modulation interludes are introduced, Monile demonstrates how sparse means, if deployed with precision, can sustain considerable tension.
