DJ Moplen outdoes himself with this reinterpretation of the Machine disco classic. Staying true to the elements of the original, he’s managed to completely redesign the track, starting with an extended version of the soulful piano intro. The increased kick drum and hand claps move the track into house territory, complemented by a funky guitar riff that was completely buried in the original. When the bass enters center stage, Moplen practically forces you to dance, leaving you vulnerable to August Darnell’s controversial lyrics. Fresh off an epochal career start with Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band, lyricist/vocalist Darnell’s collaboration with Machine came within months of his next incarnation as Kid Creole. Much like those groups, Darnell fills his track with political themes such as race, religion, and sexuality under the guise of a grandiose beat. This release features the rarest of things: a dub as good as the original. Instead of simply removing the vocals, Moplen once again rearranges the track, doing away with the slow intro and building a killer groove from scratch. In addition to the 1979 version and an a capella take, this 12" also contains Timmy Regisford’s 1994 house mix, which perfectly captures the track's dark energy. [info sheet from distribution]
