An instantly recognizable intro that Daft Punk transformed into one of their best-known anthems, "Harder Better Faster Stronger," while Edwin Birdsong's "Cola Bottle Baby" is an insatiable funk fire from the late 70s.
To think it was made almost 40 years ago: it sounds as delicious as the day it came out and is one of those classics that was way ahead of its time. It would be hard to find anyone who doesn't feel a bit nostalgic in those first 15 seconds, but not many would be able to name the original behind the sample.
A jazz-funk sound leaning towards the futuristic, partly created by the crackling synthesized bass and the ringing ride cymbal, but anchored by the groovy funk bass, vibrant guitar, and electrifying keyboards. A mix of sounds ranging from pop, disco, funk, jazz, and electro: there's no denying Birdsong's talent, a talent that would lead him to collaborate with the great Roy Ayers.
On the B-side, "Freaky Deaky Sities" speeds up the tempo but maintains that mix of futuristic and funk: an ode to all disco dancers. The fusion of Talkbox business with Birdsong and his repertoire, bongos and cowbells alongside rock-style guitars, is pure power play for the dance floor.
An underrated talent given new life: officially, remastered and re-released for the first time on 12-inch vinyl for a fuller, more powerful pressing. [info from the label]
