And yes, the floor really is lava when Mayer is in top form, as he is here, with three tracks that swing, effortlessly, between Mayer's two poles of music: dancefloor eruption and heartbreaking beauty. There's more of the former here, it must be said, but there is beauty even in generous discipline, and the relentless “Cry Me A Raver” somehow seems to bring together decades of Kompakt pleasure in six dizzying minutes: disco-fied arpeggios, shimmering, hand-polished textures, abstruse patterns phasing in and out of the beat. “Don't Sync With My Tag” stomps with destructive glee, a rhythm as undeniable as the cross-rhythms shaker are silkenly sensual. There's always been something practical, functional and utilitarian about Speicher, but there's nothing more suited to a DJ's day-to-day life: Mayer tells us the title is “a super annoying message that pops up every time you open Rekordbox. Nobody knows what it means. It's a DJ mystery.” But who needs answers, anyway? By the time you come close to solving the enigma, Mayer has spirited you off to Detroit via Cologne with “It Isn't What It Isn't”, a little nod to Rhythim Is Rhythim. “You're May, I'm Mayer, I always told him”, Michael chuckles.
