DIRTY TALK
12"
genre: HOUSE - DEEP HOUSE
label: Voyage Direct Cat.No: VD25
William Djoko is in a frisky mood. On “Dirty Talk,” he unleashes a red-light district dance bomb that’s as shamelessly vulgar as an overnight rave in one of Amsterdam’s most licentious brothels.
Djoko is no stranger to Voyage Direct. After first appearing on the label in 2012, he has returned numerous times since, becoming an integral member of the label’s burgeoning artist family. He has released material on Tuskegee, Mobilee, and Leftroom, amongst others, developing an approach that draws inspiration from numerous house and techno styles. Yet little of his previous output can match the raw, teasing lust and sexed-up funk of “Dirty Talk.” Driven by Djoko’s own spoken, whispered and sleazy vocal, the original version combines the squelchy, bass-rich rhythms of classic Dance-Mania style ghetto house, the delay-laden guitar flashes of vintage New York proto-house, and the kind of snappy, funk-fuelled keyboards – supplied by fellow Dutch producer Kid Sublime – that recall the glory days of 80s electro-funk. Djoko offers an alternative version in the shape of the stripped-back, minimalist “Club Dub,” with his whispered “Accapella” completing the A-side.
On the flip, two Voyage Direct stalwarts take turns to rework the track. First up is label boss Tom Trago, who builds on Djoko’s elastic percussion with some new, dense drum hits. These are combined with spacey synths and sharp string stabs, giving “Dirty Talk” a more classic techno/house flavour. In contrast, Werner takes the opportunity to deliver an X-rated interpretation, packed with driving Chicago-influenced rhythms, intergalactic pads, sweaty acid lines, and surging percussion. It’s a suitably breathtaking remix.
