Following the outstanding D.J. Rogers release, South Street Disco sets its sights on reissuing two seminal and highly sought-after 70s jazz funk Loft classics. One side houses Miroslav Vitous’ cosmic disco delight 'New York City', the other unveils Eumir Deodato's Latin-infused swirling ‘Whistle Bump’.
First up, Czech jazz bassist and Weather Report founding member, Miroslav Vitous, delivers the infectious vibes of 'New York City'. Tapping into the spirit of New York's bustling mid-70s underground scene, Vitous offers an Arthur Russell-esque jam, fusing swirling new wave-style vocals and sassy bass lines over cosmic keys, a trademark of the master Herbie Hancock. Combined with tight drumming and fiery, distorted riffs, it paved the way for a dancefloor hit and a clear precursor to the early house scene. With originals selling for over £120, it’s about time ‘New York City’ received an official remastered reissue.
On the other hand, a timeless instrumental Brazilian jazz-funk gem from Eumir Deodato, which also became a certified classic through intense rotation on revered New York dancefloors, most notably via David Mancuso at The Loft. Positive sensations amplified by lively Rhodes, psychedelic strumming and that carnival-esque Latin-infused bongo and whistle combination. Carefree, unbridled energy that sees Pops Popwell’s funk bass perfectly accompany flaming guitar solos and a heavenly horn section – impossible not to groove to. Pure South American sunshine bottled and ready for dispensing at will. [info sheet from distribution]
