Joey Negro and Sean P’s influential first volume of ‘Disco Not Disco.’ “Disco Not Disco” was a perfectly timed compilation upon its release in 2000. Issued when interest in the myths, history and playlists of original NYC clubs like Paradise Garage and The Loft was at its height, the album drew on the outer limits of alternative disco championed by Levan and Mancuso, bringing together unlikely dancefloor anthems by rock artists like Yoko Ono and Ian Dury, obscurities from labels like BC and Splash and choice oddities from the unique mind of avant-garde hero Arthur Russell. It was essentially a celebration of New York’s sonic melting pot in the early 80s, an era when punk had fizzled out and disco had gone commercial and saccharine; in its place, the post-punk movement had spawned brilliant oddities that messed with established rules.
