A noughties classic, a catchy anthem, a quintessential yardie ringtone; Roman Flügel’s once inescapable “Geht’s Noch?” celebrates its 21st birthday on Running Back, revisited and remixed by a host of artists spanning the scenes, paying heartfelt homage to its absurd energy.
Released casually as part of a 2004 Cocoon Records compilation, “Geht’s Noch?” emerged from the depths with Sven Väth’s support, becoming an international phenomenon, conquering and uniting the dominant minimal and electroclash scenes. Some have claimed it laid the foundations for the ‘Dirty Dutch’ house scene, albeit from over the border, in Germany. Known for infusing much needed lightness into the contemporary club landscape through her Live From Earth parties, DJ Gigola adds further potency to “Geht’s Noch?”, inducing a planet-rattling kick drum, before shaping the track’s characteristic bleeps into nonsensical Morse code for added enjoyment. Another connoisseur of rave culture, Luca Lozano, offers two alternate takes; his “Technocs” mix is imbued with cowbells, robotic vocal commands, and stadium handclaps. Meanwhile, the “Gehts Garage Remix” draws a clever connection to the original’s as-yet-untapped British funky potential.
Peder Mannerfelt, who straddles innovation, functionality, humour, and seriousness much like its original author, takes “Geht’s Noch?” to truly dizzying heights. His remix builds unexpected drama and catharsis around the nagging riff, before a collaboration with studio partner Par Grindvik, Aasthma,
gets the club jumping with a slick, anime-toned version, full of outlandishness and colour.
And while the digital release of Geht’s Noch? also features interpretations from Audion, Domnik Eulberg and Moguai, this vinyl outing brings the Steve Angello vs. Who’s Who remix to wax, the one that helped take “Geht’s Noch?” out of the underground and into the stratosphere. Twenty years on, Flügel’s maverick hit is still soaring. Love it or hate it, “Geht’s Noch?” will still make you lose your mind.
