Isolée is best known for his early work, the now classic 90s track "Beau Mot Plage" (1998), included on his first album "Rest" (2000), his second album "We Are Monster" selected as "Best New Album" and highly praised as Album of the Year in 2005 by Pitchfork. "Allowance" (2013) for DJ Koze's Pampa label, "Pisco" (2016) for Mano le Tough's Maeve label, and the launch of his own label "Resort Island" with his fourth album "Resort Island" in 2023 are his highlights to date.
"Love Algorithm", the title of the first single, pulls us down the social media rabbit hole. Love and algorithm - can they really get along? In this deep house track, Isolée embraces the unpredictable. The slacker who takes his time with things. He lets some vocal snippets slowly creep into the track, and fans might recognize a Kerri Chandler vibe in the background textures, perhaps most evident in the sparser "3rd places dub" version on the B-side.
"OMG so random" feels a bit old school, without speeding up the tempo. While not "fast", this track is driving and powerful. Its classy dub sounds and textures, set against some scratchy, seemingly exotic, flute-like instruments, make this track less categorised than it might appear at first glance. It combines the reflection of a contemplative melody with the quality of a dance track.
In "chopstick!", the third and final single, the bassline also dominates. Isolée rediscovered one of his 80s Roland analog synthesizers, the MKS30, which creates that characteristic muted sound. This track is the one that speeds up the tempo the most. With the launch of his "resort island" label and the release of his critically acclaimed fourth album in 2023, Isolée has drawn attention to his music after a long period of silence. Expectations for the future are high, especially for his new label, which has not yet ceased to exist. With the third "resort island" release, the label has also refined its graphics, to integrate the soundscapes of this dizzying island. [info sheet from distribution]
