There are few people in the world who haven’t been touched by the work of Frankie Knuckles. Long-regarded as “The Godfather of House” for his unparalleled contribution to the house music we know today; what started as an underground movement in Chicago grew to international heights thanks to Frankie. His records earned him worldwide acclaim, allowing him to work with some of the biggest names in the world, including Diana Ross, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.
Five years ago, Frankie sadly passed away in Chicago, on March 31, 2014, leaving behind one of the greatest house music legacies spanning almost four decades. Now, he is commemorated by his long-time writing and producing partner, Eric Kupper. Eric, himself an accomplished DJ, producer and writer, has worked on over 116 Billboard number one dance records and played a pivotal role in many of Frankie's productions. After working together for many years, they established themselves as "Director's Cut" in 2011 and started to produce original releases and remixes based on the classic “Def Mix” sound, equally sharing credits for their creations.
Together they re-produced and re-imagined classic tracks for the modern dance floor, with reworks including tracks from Marshall Jefferson, Ashford & Simpson, Artful & Ridney and The Sunburst Band, alongside Frankie Knuckles original tracks. These releases have now been compiled by Eric to be released in the special “The Directors Cut Collection” album on SoSure Music. It includes the ‘Director’s Cut’ re-works of Frankie classics like ‘Your Love’ and ‘Take You There’ featuring Jamie Principle, along with Frankie’s first ever number one single, ‘The Whistle Song’, for which Eric shares writing credits.
Amongst the numerous classic re-works, a previously unreleased version of Ashford & Simpson’s ‘Bourgie Bourgie’ and a massive Director’s Cut Retro Signature mix of The House Music Anthem (Move Your Body) by Marshall Jefferson featuring Curtis McClain, stand out.The Director’s Cut Collection is a fitting tribute to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Frankie’s passing, whilst providing a platform for Eric to tell his version of the creative story. This album will be released in conjunction with The Frankie Knuckles Foundation, who are committed to continuing Frankie’s legacy long into the future.
